Leading AUKUS cyber firm Penten has welcomed the signature of a contract with the Department of Defence, through the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) to deliver a further evolution of our TrapRadio device – Next Generation Electronic Deception (NGED). This contract represents another significant milestone as part of the inaugural AUKUS Electronic Warfare (EW) Innovation Challenge, for which Penten was originally selected in 2024.

These advanced, man-portable devices employ AI-powered electronic deception technology to provide an advanced capability for the Australian Defence Force and protect the lives of Australian troops and defend our high value assets on the battlefield.

This Defence contract will support further development of the Trap Radio platform, providing a multispectral, multidomain electronic deception capability to the ADF.

Current global conflicts have highlighted the saturation of the modern battlefield with electronic warfare threats and the need for deploying advanced EW capabilities across joint AUKUS forces. NGED’s Multispectral Deception capability is critical to protect high value assets and people.

Penten Chief Executive Officer Greg Barsby said ‘We thank ASCA’s leadership under Professor Emily Hilder for their support of these life-saving Australian innovations, and their commitment to creating export opportunities for Australian defence technology’.

To help realise these export opportunities, Penten has recently announced its intention to merge with long-standing UK cyber partner Amiosec. Subject to final regulatory approval, the proposed combination of Penten and Amiosec will create an AUKUS-focused cyber engineering powerhouse with approximately 300 security-cleared engineers, cyber product experts and innovators. ‘The proposed merger will allow us to take cutting edge Australian innovations like Trap Radio and NGED to our allied partners, supporting high tech engineering jobs locally and internationally’ concluded Mr Barsby.

About Trap Radio:

TrapRadio is an AI-powered electronic decoy system that provides highly realistic mimics of friendly force communication.

This technology enhances the survivability of high value assets on the battlefield. The realistic signals target adversary intelligence producing sensors and systems. TrapRadio causes confusion, distrust and delay by degrading the adversary’s intelligence system and undermining the adversary Commander’s decision authority.

TrapRadio reduces the complexity of mimicry, allowing combat forces to manage, manipulate and disguise their own RF signatures, similar to that of physical camouflage. This can be done simply and without technically trained personnel.

About NGED:

NGED builds on Penten’s TrapRadio Electronic Deception technology by replicating significantly more complex RF signatures as well as the non-communications technologies of high value platforms. This technology can support a far wider range of tactical to strategic use cases and operational effects. NGED will be a critical capability to enhance the survivability of ADF platforms, but also degrade adversary ISR, targeting and decision-making effectiveness in the future.
