About the Role

The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee the development and delivery of Penten products and engineering solutions. Based in Canberra and reporting to the Head of Engineering, this position will ensure system solutions align with organisational goals and the Penten Development lifecycle to support operational efficiency, scalability and reliability. Specifically, duties include:

Technical Leadership and Guidance

  • Contribute to developing comprehensive system solutions that incorporate all system components, including hardware, software, networks and information security.
  • Contribute to the definition and refinement of Secure Mobility’s engineering process to ensure that it meets Secure Mobility’s business needs.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Engineering, ensure there are sufficiently trained and experienced staff allocated to each project and product development to satisfy requirements.
  • When delegated, endorse product architectures and designs.
  • When delegated, endorse operational / in-service changes.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance through the system lifecycle.

Solution Design and Development

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into detailed technical specifications.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Engineering, ensure all personnel engaged on engineering tasks are adequately trained on Secure Mobility’s engineering process and associated tools.
  • Ensure that system designs meet specified requirements and security needs.

Integration and Interoperability

  • Assess integration of new solutions with existing systems and platforms.
  • Address interoperability challenges through definition of interfaces, APIs and protocols that facilitate efficient integration between systems.

Standards and Compliance

  • When delegated, chair applicable product and engineering gates & reviews.
  • Audit samples of engineering artefacts generated by engineering staff to ensure engineering processes are being correctly interpreted and that appropriate architectural standards and guidelines are being met guidelines to ensure consistency and quality across teams.
  • Ensure that solutions comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and security protocols.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams within the business to deliver high-quality solutions aligned to business goals.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Engineering, authorise the level and scope of engineering design delegation which can be undertaken by individual personnel.
  • Communicate architectural decisions, plans, and status updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to continuously enhance solution designs.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement within existing systems and processes.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing

  • Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation for product lifecycle, project deliverables and knowledge sharing.
  • Mentor and train team members on system principles and best practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Extensive engineering and systems lifecycle experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering processes used within Government and Defence.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to design robust systems to address complex business requirements.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and influence decision-making processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to articulate technical concepts and system designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications & Eligibility

To be eligible for this position you must:

  • Hold an Engineering degree (or equivalent)
  • Be an Australian citizen with an AGSVA NV2 clearance (or eligible and willing to undergo the process)
  • Be a full member of Engineers Australia (or can satisfy the requirements to become a full member)
